Guru's Talk

(From Book #173, “One Dream, One World”)

At a Department of Oncology at a large hospital, two cancer patients had just finished a chemotherapy session and were talking to each other:

“Today, you and me, our lives are at a critical instant. Is there anything that can save us?

The other replied with a bitter smile, “A miracle!”

The first said resignedly, “There are no miracles in this world, are there?”

The man with the bitter smile said, “Some people focus on chanting ‘Amitabha Buddha,’ some others focus on chanting “Guan Yin Bodhisattva,’ and others focus on chanting sutra. They all expect miracles, either Buddhadharma responses or ‘God save us...’”

“Does it work?”

“Some work, some don’t.”

“Why?”

“It all depends on the affinity.”

The one with the bitter smile said, “Some caught cancer and after chemotherapy they were really cured. But others were not cured and they died. It is a kind of affinity, isn’t it?”

“You’re right.”

The bitter smile man said, “Someone gave me a sutra. It’s called ‘True Buddha Sutra.’ Since we’re talking about affinity, I would like to give it to you. Recite it. Perhaps you have the affinity. But you must have confidence. The confidence is very important.”

So the first patient took the “True Buddha Sutra” and recited it once and chanted the heart mantra. One night, in his dream, he felt someone reach a hand into his lung and remove a lot of filthy stuff. He felt such relief—every pain in his body suddenly decreased, and even more, it seemed to completely disappear.

The man in his dream then said to him, “You have the affinity. Your sickness will be cured. You will live to the age of 99.”

The next day, when he awoke, strangely enough this cancer patient, after a complete physical examination, discovered that all of his cancer cells had disappeared. They had really disappeared. All of them.

But the patient with the bitter smile, who had given him the “True Buddha Sutra,” died. His soul had freed itself from the body.

The cured cancer patient took his True Buddha Sutra to various Buddhist temples and Taoist temples to ask the monks and laypeople about it. But everyone he talked to said they did not know this sutra.

After searching for a long time, he then realized that it was a sutra revealed by Living Buddha Lian Sheng, Sheng-Yen Lu. He looked for me, to express his profound gratitude. Yet he couldn’t find me. Because I’m in retreat. My door is closed. I will see no one.

He went to a Lei Zang Si temple to take refuge and to receive empowerment.

He said to others, “In my dream, I saw a man reach his hand into my lung and pull filth out of my body. That man was actually Guru Sheng-Yen Lu.”
