2005: Lotus Light Charity Society Mobilizes to Provide Relief and Resources
for Victims of South Asia Tsunami Catastrophe

[More Info...]

International Lotus Light Charity Society Founder, Living Buddha Lian Sheng, has always encouraged the people of LLCS to “help in any accident or disaster, to help others who are in urgent need!” This is both encouragement and an expectation for all members of the Lotus Light Charity Society.

The undersea earthquake off northern Indonesia the morning of December 26, 2004 created huge tsunamis creating devastation in 11 countries in Asia and Africa. As of December 30, an estimated 110,000 lives had been lost and more than one million rendered homeless. In many of the affected areas, living conditions for the survivors are bleak and desperate, hardly livable at all. In some countries, the dead bodies are stacked up like mountains. And the numbers of dead are increasing every day as the more remote areas are reached. This tragic event has brought a feeling of great shock and suffering to all of us.

The Lotus Light Charity Society has been mobilizing its resources since December 27, planning rescue and relief efforts and pulling together the people of the more than 300 chapters of the True Buddha School and 88 branch offices of LLCS. The Society is very actively contributing to the global fundraising and disaster relief, contributing money and manpower to help the disaster victims to regain a sense of stability. The Vancouver Head Office of the International Lotus Light Charity Society is working with its branch offices in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia to organize local Disaster Relief/Rescue Teams to travel to the disaster regions to provide support and relief in the rescue and cleanup efforts.

There are several ways for the Lotus Light Charity Society to assist in this disaster relief:

1. Cash donations and fundraising

2. Providing food and resources through the Disaster Relief/Rescue Teams

3. Every LLCS member and True Buddha School disciple chanting the Great Mantra for Saving Sentient Beings from Disaster 10,000 times, dedicated to the victims of the South Asia catastrophe

4. Conducting charitable Buddhist ceremonies dedicated to the delivery of the souls of those lost in the disaster.

The Lotus Light Charity Society has already conducted three days of fire offering ceremonies at the Lotus Light Temple at 347 Hastings Street East in Vancouver (December 31, 2004 through January 2, 2005) to deliver the souls of the thousands whose lives were tragically lost in this disaster.

Disaster Relief cash donations (by cheque payable to Lotus Light Charity Society) may be sent to the LLCS head office:

LLCS 2006 Winter Charity Drive

The Vancouver chapter of the international Lotus Light Charity Society (LLCS) announces its 11th annual Winter Charity Drive to help the homeless in Vancouver Lower Mainland. Last year, the Chapter distributed over 11,000 items of warm clothing and non-perishable food items. This year, the Charity Society will again be distributing clothing items and non-perishable food items to a number of homeless shelters. And once again, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society has generously donated a large amount of food items towards this important community campaign. We sincerely thank them for their continuing tremendous support!

We invite the local media to join us for one of our visits to the shelters to distribute these gifts:
Date: Saturday, December 9, 2006
Time: 1:00 pm
Place: Triage, Princess Rooms, and Wind Chimes Shelter 707 Powell Street, Vancouver

Packages will also be distributed to Covenant House, Family Services of Greater Vancouver, Oppenheimer Park, Bridge Housing for Women, Grandview Calvary Baptist Church Crossroads Ministry, Fraserside Community Services Society, and Helping Spirit Lodge. The LLCS Youth Group will also be bringing winter clothing items to Sunny Hill Hospital and various Senior Care Homes during the months of January through March of 2007.

We look forward to sharing with you this special moment of community caring. Together, we can indeed make a difference in the lives of some of our less fortunate residents.

The Lotus Light Charity Society was established in 1993 by Buddhist Grand Master Sheng-Yen Lu to help relieve the suffering of the less fortunate in the world, through education, community partnership, and international relief programs. LLCS currently has 90 chapters located throughout the world, with its world headquarters in Vancouver. Each chapter supports local causes and contributes to global causes such as earthquake and famine relief, including over $290,000 towards the rebuilding of homes and schools destroyed in Indonesia by the December 2004 tsunami, and over 10,000 pounds of rice to local food banks last year. LLCS is also an active supporter of other charity organizations, including Quest Outreach Society, Doctors Without Borders, BC Cancer Society, BC Children Hospital, and many others at the community, provincial, and national levels.
